In its main field of application – surface coatings – pentaerythritol results in greater viscosity, hardness, durability and water resistance. This is why pentaerythritol is used in paints and varnishes, for example. Alkyd paints containing pentaerythritol have excellent adhesive properties and are weatherproof.
Pentaerythritol esters of fatty acids are also used as plasticisers to improve the elasticity and toughness of synthetic resins. Depending on the degree of esterification, pentaerythritol can take different physical forms and therefore also finds application as an emulsifier.
Examples of applications
Pentaerythritol is mainly used in the production of alkyd paints and varnishes. It is also used as a plasticiser and emulsifying agent, and in electroplating.
